Mulch Calculator for a Massachusetts Spring Bed Refresh
Enter your project dimensions
Most people open this mulch calculator in the same two weeks: the ground has thawed, last year's layer has gone gray and flat, and the beds along the front of the house need to look finished before the daffodils are over.
Take a typical run. A 32 by 4 ft bed along the front of the house, being refreshed over a raked-open old layer at two inches, plus two dogwood rings five feet across at three inches. The depth box takes one figure for a run, so that is two passes of the tool added together.
- Bed: 128 sq ft x 2 / 12 = 21.33 cu ft
- Rings: two circles five feet across are 39.27 sq ft; x 3 / 12 = 9.82 cu ft
- Total: 31.15 cu ft, which is 31.15 / 27 = 1.15 cu yd
Round it to a yard and a half. In store bags at two cubic feet each, that same order is about sixteen bags. The example is hypothetical, but the ratio is the real reason the page exists.
Circle mode for a tree ring, five beds in one total
Enter each bed as its own area. The tool takes rectangle, circle or multiple areas up to five, so a front bed, a side bed and three rings can go in together and come back as one figure.
Length and width go in feet, or the diameter for a round bed or tree ring. Depth goes in inches and accepts anything from 0.25 to 24, though bed work lives at the shallow end of that range.
Depth is the input worth slowing down for:
| Situation | Depth |
|---|---|
| Refresh over last year's layer, raked open first | 2 in |
| Bare soil or a newly cut bed | 3 in |
| Anywhere at all | no more than 4 in |
| Playground fall zone, using certified chips | 6 in minimum |
Beyond four inches the layer stays wet and roots lose air. Leave a clear ring three to six inches out from any trunk, keep the layer flat rather than piled against the bark, and hold it back from siding.
Yards to order on, bags to compare with, tons that mean little
Three results come back: cubic yards, tons and cubic feet. Mulch is sold by volume, so cubic yards is the working number.
The conversion that matters at the garden center is 27 cubic feet in a cubic yard, which is 13.5 bags at two cubic feet, or 9 bags at three. The worked example above, at 1.15 cubic yards, is about 15.5 bags.
The ton figure is there for consistency across the site, not because anyone orders mulch by weight. This site publishes roughly 600 lb per cubic yard for shredded mulch, about 0.30 tons per yard, so that entire bed refresh weighs in around 690 lb. A single cubic yard of crusher run is five times heavier than a cubic yard of mulch, and the volume is identical. Moisture moves the mulch figure around, which is why the weight is approximate and the volume is not.
Half a yard over on beds you will be re-edging in April
Order the round-up. Mulch settles and knits down over the first few weeks, edges get recut, and the half yard you have left goes on the bed behind the garage that nobody measured.
Two Massachusetts-specific reasons to be honest about timing. Spread a pile within a week or two, because a heap left standing into the fourth week heats up in the middle and turns sour. And plan on roughly 30 to 45 minutes of wheelbarrow work per yard, which on a wet spring lawn over dense till means either boards down or a dry weekend.
A second hypothetical for scale: a newly cut bed of 240 sq ft at three inches is 240 x 3 / 12 = 60 cu ft, 2.22 cu yd, about 30 bags. Two and a quarter yards is a genuine afternoon.
Shredded hardwood, nuggets, dyed, or something that is not mulch at all
The quantity does not change when you change type, because the volume calculation does not care what fills it. What changes is behavior.
Shredded Mulch is the default here, and it interlocks, which matters on the sloped beds that come with a hilly Massachusetts lot. Nuggets and coarse chips can last a season or two longer but float and travel in the kind of downpour that arrives with a summer thunderstorm. Dyed material holds color longer and breaks down more slowly.
If what the bed actually needs is depth rather than a surface layer, you are on the wrong tool. Filling a raised bed is a job for the soil calculator and Garden Soil; patching a thin lawn is the topsoil calculator and screened loam. Mulch goes on top of a finished bed, not into it.
Where a three-yard load can sit on a town driveway
A three-yard load takes up about the footprint of a small car. On a tight lot, that is the whole decision.
Clear a parking space of driveway and put a tarp down first, since shredded material can stain fresh concrete. Delivery is arranged at checkout by ZIP code once you set the quantity and a date: the order is matched to a supplier in the network near that address, an agent confirms the exact delivery address, and what the truck needs is clear access to the spot where the load goes down.
Beds that shed their bark down a slope every spring are the ones usually finished in stone instead, sized on the pea stone calculator. The rest of the yard has its own tools on the page that holds every calculator on the site.
Common questions
My beds curve around the front walk. How do I measure them?
Cut the shape into pieces you can measure. A long curving bed is close enough to a rectangle at its average width, a bay at one end goes in as a circle, and the tool will add up to five of them. Mulch is bought in half yards anyway, so a small over-measure disappears in the rounding.
Last year's mulch is still there. Do I measure the full depth or just the top-up?
Just the top-up. Rake the old layer to break the crust, check what is left with a trowel, and enter the difference that brings the total to two or three inches. If the old layer is matted or moldy, take it off and treat the bed as bare at three inches.
What happens if I come up a half yard short?
Nothing structural, unlike a base layer. You finish with one thin bed, and a thin layer lets weeds through and dries out faster in July. The usual fix is a few store bags to close the gap, which is exactly the swap the bag conversion above is meant to help you avoid.
How accurate is the yardage?
The arithmetic is exact. Bed edges are the loose part, since almost nobody measures the same bed the same way twice, and settlement takes a little more in the first month. Measure to the edge you intend to cut rather than the one that is there now.
Which product page do I open once I have a number?
Shredded Mulch, ordered by the cubic yard. Set the quantity to the figure this tool returned, rounded up to the next half yard, then pick a delivery date.
