The job pea stone gets ordered for most around here is the strip of ground that never dries out. A shaded side yard, the run between raised beds, the worn track from the back door to the shed: grass gives up on it, it holds water after every storm because the till underneath will not let the water down, and by April it is bare mud that gets walked into the kitchen. Replacing that strip with a few inches of rounded stone over a prepared base is a weekend's work that ends the problem permanently.

The wet strip of lawn that pea stone usually replaces

The stone itself is about three eighths of an inch, naturally rounded rather than crushed, in tans, creams, grays, browns and the occasional red. The rounding is why it is comfortable to walk on and why children can kneel on it, and the color mix is why a path in it reads as finished rather than as construction material.

What it does for a wet strip is straightforward. Water passes straight through the layer instead of standing on the surface, and there is no soil left for it to turn into mud. The stone does not break down, does not fade in the way organic mulch does, and does not need replacing each season.

One thing it does not do is fix the ground below. Water that has nowhere to go still has nowhere to go: it simply arrives under the stone instead of on top of it. On genuinely saturated ground, deal with the drainage first and use the stone as the finished surface afterwards.

How rounded stone behaves on till, on a slope and under a plow blade

Round is the whole story. Each stone can roll past its neighbors, so the layer never locks up the way crushed stone does. Three consequences follow, and they explain most disappointments.

On level ground with a confined edge, the layer stays put and takes foot traffic well. On a slope it creeps, a little more with every rain and every freeze-thaw cycle, until it has collected at the bottom. Above roughly a gentle grade, either terrace the run with a low step or choose an angular stone instead.

Under vehicle tires it pushes into ridges, and under a plow blade it comes off entirely. That rules it out for a drive or a turnaround that gets plowed, which is the single most common mistake with this material in a state where everything gets plowed. Walkway Gravel holds a path surface better where foot traffic is heavy, and Driveway Gravel is the material for anything a car sits on.

Edging, base and depth for a path through a garden

Order of work matters more than the stone itself.

Edging first. Steel, stone, brick or treated timber, set proud enough to contain two or three inches of stone, along every side that is not already confined by a wall or a bed. Without it the stone migrates into the lawn and the lawn creeps into the stone, and both are tedious to undo.

Base second. Strip the turf and topsoil out, lay geotextile on the exposed ground, then a compacted layer over it. On the dense till common across the hilltowns and the Worcester plateau, the fabric is what keeps the soil below from working up into the stone. A compacted course of Processed Gravel underneath is what stops the path from rutting and gives it a shape that sheds water.

Stone last, and shallower than instinct suggests. Two inches of pea stone over a firm base walks far better than four inches of it over nothing. Deep loose rounded stone is unpleasant to walk through and impossible to push a wheelbarrow across.

Raking, topping up and what October leaves do to it

Upkeep is light but not zero. The stone shifts toward the edges and the low points under traffic, so an annual raking back is the main task, usually in spring when the thaw has finished moving things around.

Autumn leaves are the other job. They sit on the surface and, if left through the winter, break down into the top of the stone and leave a fine layer that holds water and grows weeds. Blow or rake them off before they get wet and flat, and the stone stays clean for years.

Expect to add a small quantity every few years to replace what has been walked out, spilled into beds or lost to leaf clearing. Because the stone does not decay, a top-up is a top-up rather than a replacement.

A 3 by 44 garden path and a 12 by 30 boat pad, in tons

Hypothetical examples. This site publishes about 2,800 lb per cubic yard for pea gravel at three eighths of an inch, roughly 1.40 tons per cubic yard, and that approximate figure converts them.

A 3 foot by 44 foot garden path at 2 inches:

  • Area: 3 x 44 = 132 square feet
  • Depth: 2 / 12 = 0.167 ft
  • Volume: 132 x 0.167 = 22 cubic feet
  • Cubic yards: 22 / 27 = 0.81
  • Tons: 0.81 x 1.40 = 1.14

A 12 foot by 30 foot boat or trailer pad at 3 inches, as the visible surface over a compacted base:

  • Area: 12 x 30 = 360 square feet
  • Depth: 3 / 12 = 0.25 ft
  • Volume: 360 x 0.25 = 90 cubic feet
  • Cubic yards: 90 / 27 = 3.33
  • Tons: 3.33 x 1.40 = 4.67

As a coverage figure to carry around: a cubic yard spread 2 inches deep covers about 162 square feet, and about 108 square feet at 3 inches. A long rural lane is where the arithmetic stops being the point. The tonnage for a 500 foot lane is manageable; the fact that rounded stone will not stay in the wheel tracks is not, so that lane wants a crushed surface instead. Odd-shaped beds and paths go faster through the pea gravel calculator, which totals up to five areas.

Comfortable underfoot

I used it between stepping stones. The smooth texture is comfortable to walk on and the color works nicely in the garden. I used it at my home in Boston, MA and would choose it again for a similar project.
