Size and Grading
- Size
- 1 inch to 3 inches
- Type
- Smooth, naturally rounded stones
- Color
- Tans, grays, browns and occasional reds
Run a hand through a load of river rock and nothing catches. The pieces are smooth all over, shaped by water rather than broken by a crusher, and they roll against each other instead of locking. Colors come mixed: tans, grays, browns and the occasional red, which is why a bed of it reads as ground rather than as a poured surface. Sizes run one inch to three inches, so the individual stones are large enough to see and heavy enough that a summer downpour on a small Massachusetts lot will not float them across the lawn.
Choose it if your yard needs a surface that outlasts mulch
The comparison every buyer is actually making is against bark mulch, and it comes down to how often you want to be doing this.
Mulch breaks down. In a climate with wet springs and freeze-thaw running from late autumn into March, it composts into the bed and needs topping up annually. Stone does not break down. It holds its color and its shape, it does not blow around, and the maintenance is occasional rather than scheduled.
The trade-off is that stone is permanent in a way mulch is not. It does not feed the soil, it is hard work to remove once it is down, and around plants that want a cool, moist root run it is the wrong choice. Beds of shrubs, drip edges along a foundation, borders that never get dug: those are where it earns its place. An annual bed that gets turned over every May is not.
Skip it if the job is a flagstone walk or a play area
Two jobs it gets ordered for where something else does the work better.
A flagstone walkway is the first. Rounded stone this size will not stay put between slabs and it is genuinely unpleasant to walk on. The joints and the bedding under flagstone want Stone Dust, which packs tight and holds a level. Use the rounded stone as a border beside the walk rather than inside it.
A playground surface is the second. Smooth one to three inch stones roll underfoot, which is exactly what you do not want where children run and land. Pea Stone at three eighths of an inch is the small rounded stone for play areas, and Mason Sand is the softer option again.
Drip edges, dry creeks and the ground between raised beds
Where it does work, it works well.
A drip edge strip along a foundation takes roof runoff off the gutterless side of a house or below a downspout, keeps splash off siding, and keeps soil out of the air. This is one of the most useful things a few yards of it will do on an older Massachusetts house.
A dry creek bed gives spring snowmelt and heavy rain a visible route across a yard. On dense till, where water sits near the surface for weeks, a shaped channel of rounded stone moves runoff to where you want it and looks like a feature rather than a drainage repair.
The ground around a group of raised vegetable beds is the third, and this is a use worth separating carefully. Stone belongs on the ground around and between the beds, where it keeps weeds down and keeps mud off boots. It does not go inside them. Growing soil is Garden Soil work. And if the aisles between beds get walked every day with a full watering can, a finer stone underfoot is kinder than one to three inch rounds.
River rock is the finish, not the layer that carries water
The distinction that saves people money: this is a surface material, not a base or a functional drainage layer.
Water moves through it, but it is not doing structural drainage. A French drain still wants clean angular stone around a pipe. A patio still wants a compacted base. A slope that is actively eroding under real water force wants stone heavy enough to resist being rolled, which is RipRap, not this.
What goes underneath matters too. Landscape fabric under a stone bed keeps the layer from sinking into the soil and slows weeds coming up, though wind-blown seed will eventually germinate in the debris that collects on top regardless. On a slope or at a lawn edge, an edging strip stops the whole layer migrating, which it will otherwise do gradually every year.
Bordering four raised beds in a MetroWest back garden
A worked example, hypothetical rather than a real project. Four raised beds grouped into a footprint 20 feet by 14 feet, with a three foot stone strip running around the outside of the group.
- Outer rectangle: 20 + 3 + 3 = 26 ft, and 14 + 3 + 3 = 20 ft, so 26 x 20 = 520 square feet
- Inner footprint: 20 x 14 = 280 square feet
- Strip area: 520 - 280 = 240 square feet
At two inches deep, which is the landscaping depth the measuring guide on this site works from:
- Depth in feet: 2 / 12 = 0.167 ft
- Volume: 240 x 0.167 = 40 cubic feet
- Cubic yards: 40 / 27 = 1.48
Call it one and a half yards, and 1.55 with the five percent the river rock calculator adds by default. Go to three inches for better coverage over fabric and it is 240 x 0.25 = 60 cubic feet, or 60 / 27 = 2.22 yards. That extra inch costs three quarters of a yard on a strip this size.
At the roughly 2,700 lb per cubic yard this site publishes for one to three inch river rock, about 1.35 tons per yard, the two inch strip is 1.48 x 1.35 = 2 tons and the three inch version 2.22 x 1.35 = 3 tons, near enough in both cases and approximate either way. Check the figure in the river rock calculator before ordering.
When the figure is settled, set a quantity and pick a delivery date on this page. Delivery is worked out at checkout from your ZIP code, and the driver needs a clear spot he can reach and tip onto. On the narrow lots around Greater Boston and the North Shore, the pile usually ends up on the driveway, so lay a tarp first and give yourself a wheelbarrow route to the back garden before the truck is booked.
