A load of walkway gravel looks noticeably finer than anything that goes on a driveway. The pieces run to three eighths of an inch, crushed rather than rounded, in a graded mix that includes smaller sizes underneath the top one. Pour some into your palm and the edges are sharp, which is the point: angular pieces at this size knit together under a boot and stay where they were raked, instead of scattering the way a smooth stone does. On the small lots and short front walks that make up most yards around here, that difference decides whether a path still looks like a path in October.
Why does the pile look finer than the driveway load?
Because it is doing a different job. A driveway surface is sized to take a tire and a plow blade, and it is coarse enough to be unpleasant to walk on. This is sized to take a foot.
Three eighths of an inch is small enough to feel firm underfoot, small enough to sit level between stepping stones, and small enough that a wheelbarrow or a mower wheel crosses it without digging in. It is also small enough to travel, which is why containment at the edges matters more on a path than it does on a drive.
Will walkway gravel hold up as a turnaround or parking pad?
No, and this is the most common misorder on this product. A pad that takes a car, a delivery truck or a plow needs a compacted base and a surface course sized for vehicles. Fine gravel under tires pushes out to the sides, ruts where the wheels sit, and turns to washboard within a season.
Build the pad from compacted Processed Gravel and surface it with Driveway Gravel. Then use walkway gravel for the path that runs from that pad to the door, which is what most people actually wanted when they measured the whole area as one job.
Can I use it in the French drain along the foundation?
No. A drain works on the open space between washed stones, and the graded mix here includes fines that will close those spaces and silt the trench. Within a few seasons the drain carries water no better than the soil around it.
#57 Stone or Drain Rock goes in the trench. What this material can do is finish the strip above a completed drain, so the route along the foundation reads as a tidy walking surface rather than as a scar of exposed stone.
Will it fill the low spot in the back lawn?
Not sensibly. Gravel buried under soil in a hollow creates a hard layer that lawn roots cannot pass and that a mower eventually finds when the surface settles unevenly around it.
Raise a low spot with Fill Dirt and finish it with Top Soil. If the hollow is low because water runs through it every spring, which on dense till is often the case, the honest fix is to give the water a route rather than to bury the problem.
What goes under a path on dense till?
More than most people put there, which is why so many paths sink.
Strip the turf and topsoil off the route. Organic material rots and compresses, and a path laid straight onto grass will be a set of dips by the second spring. Then put a compacted base underneath, particularly on the dense lower till that holds snowmelt near the surface right through April across eastern and central Massachusetts. On the deep outwash sand of Cape Cod and the Islands the ground drains on its own and the base can be lighter, but it still wants to be firm.
Landscape fabric between subgrade and base slows weeds and stops the two layers mixing. Edging along both sides holds the gravel on the path, which on a three foot walk is the difference between a defined route and a slowly widening gray smear across the lawn.
How much do I need for a 40-foot path to the side door?
A worked example, hypothetical rather than a real project. A path 40 feet long and 3 feet wide, running from a parking area to the side door.
Base layer, compacted, at three inches:
- Area: 40 x 3 = 120 square feet
- Depth in feet: 3 / 12 = 0.25 ft
- Volume: 120 x 0.25 = 30 cubic feet
- Cubic yards: 30 / 27 = 1.11
Walkway surface at two inches, the landscaping depth the measuring guide on this site works from:
- Depth in feet: 2 / 12 = 0.167 ft
- Volume: 120 x 0.167 = 20 cubic feet
- Cubic yards: 20 / 27 = 0.74
With the five percent the gravel calculator adds by default, that surface layer comes to 0.78, so plan on about three quarters of a yard of gravel over a bit more than a yard of base.
As a rule of thumb for other paths, a cubic yard of surface gravel covers roughly 162 square feet at two inches, since a yard is 27 cubic feet and 27 divided by 0.167 gives 162. A 50 foot by 3 foot path is 150 square feet, so it lands just inside a yard at that depth.
This site publishes roughly 2,800 lb per cubic yard for driveway and walkway gravel, about 1.40 tons per yard, so that 0.74 yards of surface gravel is 0.74 x 1.40 = 1.04 tons, near enough a ton and approximate at that. Take the yardage to the gravel calculator to check it before ordering.
What does the driver need on a tight street?
A spot he can reach and tip on, agreed before the truck is booked. Delivery is arranged at checkout from your ZIP code, and on the narrow streets and shared driveways common across Greater Boston and the older mill towns, the dump point is the part worth thinking through. A pile in the wrong place gets moved twice by hand, and gravel is heavier to wheelbarrow than it looks.
