Washed; free of clay, silt and organic debris

Sand work sits inside a shorter season than most people plan for. Concrete and mortar go off badly in the cold, screeded bedding cannot be trued over frozen ground, and a sand pile that has taken a hard frost comes apart in frozen slabs that are useless until they thaw. Between the spring drying and the first sustained freezes, the jobs that need washed sand get done. Outside it, they wait.

What follows is about deciding whether this is the sand your job wants, because the other sand on this site is right at least as often.

Choose washed sand when the mix or the bed has to be clean of fines

It is a coarse-grained sand that has been through a washing process, so the clay, silt and organic debris that come with as-dug material have been taken out. Rub a handful between your fingers and it feels gritty rather than floury, and it does not leave a film on your skin.

That matters in three situations. In a concrete mix, clay coating the grains gets between the cement paste and the aggregate and weakens the result, so the wash is doing structural work. In a bedding layer, the absence of fines is what lets water drain through instead of being held against a pipe or under a slab. And in any backfill around a drainage component, fines are the thing that would eventually clog what you just installed.

It also comes into its own where the excavated material is no help. On a lot where the digging turns up cobbly till, nothing coming out of the hole is suitable for bedding a pipe, and keeping the selected sand clear of the spoil pile is part of the job.

Skip it where the bedding has to hold a stone still

The limit is friction. Coarse washed sand is loose and free-running, which is exactly why it beds a pipe evenly and exactly why a heavy flagstone set into it can rock and drift. For a flagstone walkway set by hand, Stone Dust binds under compaction and grips the underside of the stone, which is why it is the regional default under flatwork.

Two more jobs where the answer is a different product. Raised vegetable beds want Garden Soil: sand adds nothing a bed needs and drains it faster than plants like. A playground surface wants a finer, softer sand, and Mason Sand is the one sold for play use and for pool bases. Coarse sand is rough on knees and hands.

Pipe runs, post holes and form work on a lot with no room

The everyday uses are unglamorous and they are where most of the tonnage goes.

Pipe and cable bedding is the largest. Sand poured into the trench flows around the underside of the pipe so the line has continuous support instead of resting on high spots, then more goes over the top before the backfill. Even contact along the run is the whole objective.

Form filling and post holes are next. Sand flows into narrow spaces that no other material reaches cleanly, and it does it without carrying surrounding soil in with it.

Leveling and grading is the third. It fills shallow depressions, takes a screed well, and compacts into an even working surface. On a dense in-town lot where there is no room for a spoil heap and no room to store two materials, one load that can do bedding, filling and leveling is often the practical choice.

A bedding course sits on top, and the load is carried below

Worth being explicit, because this is where sand jobs go wrong. A screeded sand layer is thin by design, an inch or so under pavers. It is not a base, it does not spread load, and thickening it makes things worse rather than better, because deep loose sand under a paved surface is what produces ruts and dips a year later.

The load is carried by a compacted layer beneath: Processed Gravel on most Massachusetts base work, or Crusher Run where a finer pack suits. Get that right, keep the sand thin, and the surface holds.

A 4 by 30 walk and a 12 by 16 play area, in tons

Hypothetical examples. This site publishes about 2,700 lb per cubic yard for mason and washed sand, roughly 1.35 tons per cubic yard, and that approximate figure converts them.

A 4 foot by 30 foot walkway bedded at 1.5 inches:

  • Area: 4 x 30 = 120 square feet
  • Depth: 1.5 / 12 = 0.125 ft
  • Volume: 120 x 0.125 = 15 cubic feet
  • Cubic yards: 15 / 27 = 0.56
  • Tons: 0.56 x 1.35 = 0.75

A 12 foot by 16 foot play area at 2 inches, as a bedding layer rather than a play surface:

  • Area: 12 x 16 = 192 square feet
  • Depth: 2 / 12 = 0.167 ft
  • Volume: 192 x 0.167 = 32 cubic feet
  • Cubic yards: 32 / 27 = 1.19
  • Tons: 1.19 x 1.35 = 1.6

A 60 foot pipe trench, 18 inches wide with 6 inches of bedding, comes to 45 cubic feet, 1.67 cubic yards, about 2.25 tons. With the five percent the sand calculator adds by default for spillage, that is nearer 2.4. Bedding quantities are small, which is why it is worth combining jobs onto one delivery. The sand calculator takes up to five areas at once, and the paver sand calculator is the quicker route for a bedding course.

Booking a sand load before the ground turns

Order it for the week it is going in. A sand pile left through two wet weeks loses shape and picks up whatever it is sitting on, and a pile left into a hard freeze is unusable until it thaws.

Pick a quantity and a delivery date on this page. Delivery is arranged at checkout by ZIP code, and the driver needs clear access to a spot where the load can be tipped.
