Size and Grading

Size
Approximately 3/8 inch
Type
Angular crushed stone

The narrow strip of ground between a house and the fence line is the job this material gets ordered for more than any other in a Massachusetts town. It stays wet because two roof lines drain into it, nothing grows there, and it gets walked every day. 3/8" crushed stone is the size that turns that strip into a surface: approximately 3/8 inch, angular, and small enough to sit comfortably underfoot while still keying together instead of rolling.

The side-yard strip most 3/8 inch orders are really for

Angular pieces at this size interlock in a way rounded stone of the same diameter never does. Spread it, compact it, and the surface holds its shape under regular walking.

It is also fine enough that the finished result reads as a considered surface next to a lawn rather than as a construction leftover. That matters on a small lot where the side yard is visible from the street.

The limit is depth. This is a finishing course. Two or three inches over something firm works. Six inches of it over soft ground moves under load like any other loose stone.

Late spring to late fall: the stretch when a finish course can go down

Frozen ground stops compaction, so a top course laid in January simply sits there until spring and then settles unevenly. The window here runs from once the frost is out until the ground goes cold again.

The early end is set by the thaw rather than the calendar. Dense lower till across the Worcester plateau and the eastern suburbs stays saturated well into spring, and a finish layer put down on soft subgrade will telegraph every soft spot by summer.

The late end is set by the plow. Anything spread in November is loose when the first blade comes through. Aim to finish, compact and let a surface settle for a few weeks before the plowing season starts.

In the Berkshires and the western hilltowns the season is shorter at both ends, with snow cover lasting into spring at elevation.

What has to be packed underneath before the top course goes down

The layer that carries weight is not this one. A drive, a pad or a heavily used path wants a compacted stone-and-fines base underneath, which on Massachusetts ground means Processed Gravel at a sensible depth.

Over till that stays wet, put geotextile between subgrade and base. Without it the base sinks and the finish layer follows.

Grade the base to shed water before anything decorative goes on top. A finish course cannot correct a fall that runs the wrong way, and on a narrow side yard it is usually the fall, not the material, that made the strip wet in the first place.

Paths, drive top dressing, pipe bedding and a rock garden bed

Four uses cover most orders.

A path or patio surface is the first. Compacted, it gives an even, walkable finish that is comfortable in soft shoes, which is more than can be said for anything at three quarters of an inch.

Driveway top dressing is the second. Spread over a base built from larger aggregate, the smaller pieces settle into the surface openings and tidy up a drive that has gone patchy.

Pipe and utility bedding is the third. The small size packs around changing shapes and spreads support evenly along a run.

A rock garden bed on a dry bank is the fourth. It holds position on a gentle slope, keeps a crisp line against planting, and does not need renewing the way an organic cover does.

Lining a wet ditch is the job to hand to a bigger stone

One use to redirect. A roadside ditch or a swale that carries real flow after a thaw will move 3/8 inch stone in the first heavy rain, and at a culvert outlet it will go in the first storm. Water running in a channel sorts loose material by size and carries the small pieces to the bottom of the run.

Ditch lines and outlets want weight. #4 Crushed Stone is the working size for a ditch line, and RipRap is what goes at an outlet where the water lands hardest.

A shed or garage pad is a similar half-case. The pad itself is built from compacted base; this stone earns its place as the apron top dressing over that base, not as the structure.

A 16 by 7 rock garden bed and a 20 by 22 garage apron, in tons

Two hypothetical examples, worked from the measuring guide on this site: 2 inches for landscaping, 4 inches for driveway depths.

A 16 foot by 7 foot rock garden bed at 2 inches:

  • Area: 16 x 7 = 112 square feet
  • Depth: 2 / 12 = 0.167 ft
  • Volume: 112 x 0.167 = 18.7 cubic feet
  • Cubic yards: 18.7 / 27 = 0.69

At roughly 2,800 lb per cubic yard, the approximate figure this site publishes for 3/8 inch stone, that is about 0.97 tons. Call it a ton.

A 20 foot by 22 foot garage apron top dressing at 1.5 inches over an existing packed base:

  • Area: 20 x 22 = 440 square feet
  • Depth: 1.5 / 12 = 0.125 ft
  • Volume: 440 x 0.125 = 55 cubic feet
  • Cubic yards: 55 / 27 = 2.04, about 2.85 tons

With the five percent the stone calculator adds by default, 2.14 cubic yards, close to 3 tons. A top dressing is the one place where ordering generously pays, because a thin patch shows. Confirm the tonnage in the stone calculator before the order goes in.

What a plow blade and a March thaw do to a 3/8 inch surface

A plow takes some of it off the drive every winter, which is normal and is the reason top dressing is a repeating job rather than a one-off. Set the blade with a shoe or a skid on a stone surface and the loss drops sharply.

In the thaw, the surface softens where the base below is wet. Stay off it for a few days rather than rutting it, then rake the high spots back across the low ones once it firms.

Paths need less. A stiff brush in spring and an autumn clear of leaf litter keeps the surface looking like a surface.

When the figure is settled, choose a quantity and a delivery date on this page, or send the dimensions over from the contact page if the area is awkward to measure. Delivery is set at checkout from your ZIP code, and the driver needs a clear spot he can reach and tip onto.
